A mobile phone application for fisheries data collection.
The rapid expansion of 3G mobile phone networks globally provides an opportunity for the introduction of new technologies in fisheries data collection.
Due to its large numbers and large dispersion, small scale fisheries catches can only be monitored through sample based data collection, carried out by enumerators at the landing sites.
Till recently paper forms were filled at the landing sites and send to the department for processing. This traditional way is expensive and time consuming.
This process has been improved through the development of a mobile phone application for small scale fisheries data collection.
The mobile phone application is being implemented/tested in projects supported by FAO and World Bank in East and West Africa.
